Alpha Magenta

Alpha Magenta is the first world of Ylécium. This is a world mixed with landmasses and oceans. There are several continents, including the island continent of Vaerinor.

Vaerinor is a continent in the southern hemisphere, situated on a diagonal between the 30˚ and 60˚ latitude lines. The southwestern-most tip lies just north of the 60˚ line while the northeastern tip lies just south of 45˚ latitude. The continent is approximately 2,000 miles long and around 1,500 miles wide at its widest portion.

There are numerous outlying islands, but few are inhabited due to the sea dragons that are prevalent in the oceans except the Sheltered Sea which is either too fresh or has too shallow of an outlet to allow their passage. The largest island, the Savaged Barrens, lies to the northwest of the continent and is home to stone trolls.

In its southernmost areas of Vaerinor, the landscape is tundra with a very short summer and a long, dark winter. The northernmost portions are dry chaparral-type landscapes that are mostly grassland with drought-tolerant shrubs and some cactuses. Throughout the rest of the continent, forest lands predominate, mostly deciduous trees with conifers in the southern reaches and across the mountainous belt in the southern half of the landmass.

There are three major rivers and four large lakes. One active volcano is known to exist in the mountain range in the southern half of the continent. A large desert known as the Restless Expanse lies north of the mountain range. Much of the sand is made of hydrophobic aqualunite crystals, which are highly deadly.

Magic

In a world spawned by primordial entities who simultaneously felt a desire for Ylécium to exists, magic is created from emotions.

Beyond this fact, even the most learned among the Arch Mages understands very little of the exact origin of magic or how it truly works. However, with practice those with a natural affinity to magic can learn how to produce spells.

There’s no need for ingredients, hand gestures, or anything of the like. Magic comes from within and is purely generated from thoughts and the emotions they evoke.

Nations and Kingdoms of the Continent of Vaerinor

On the continent of Vaerinor there are currently 5 nations or kingdoms.

 

  • The Kingdom of Magiana is almost synonymous with the Order of the Unseen. It’s situated in the northeastern corner of the continent. The landscape consists of rolling hills and wide grassy fields which wrap around the central large bay. With plenty of fish, the bay feeds a majority of the population, offset by agriculture that can handle the fairly arid climate.

 

  • TrePhru (“Land of Green”) is the most lush and fertile area on the continent. TrePhru, the homeland of the Sylpham, lies just to the west of the Restless Expanse.

 

  • The Kingdom of Redron finds itself wedged in between Magiana to the North, and TrePhru to the West. The majority of the kingdom is consumed by the deadly and vast (and expanding) desert, the Restless Expanse. The desert might pose a danger, consisting as it does of the dangerous aqualunite crystals, but it has also been the source of wealth and technological advancement for Redron.

 

  • Mounra, the great mountain range that runs across the continent for a thousand miles and is the domain of the Ember Dwarves. Only a single city exists, Pyres Deep, which stands deserted. It’ll remain abandon until the day when the dwarves unite to crown the next Wielder of Wrath. Until then, the dwarven clans continue to fight amongst themselves in the massive underground constructs and tunnel systems.

 

  • Xasno is nothing more than a small bastion of an Elven empire that stretches far and wide across Alpha Magenta. Xasno, a snow-filled and ice-wretched region, stands fenced by the treacherous sea and the Mounra mountains in the North.

Known Races on the Continent of Vaerinor

In Alpha Magenta, there are four primary humanoid races and at least two uncommon races that many feel is either a myth or not intelligent enough to be considered as important.

 

  • Humans are common across the northern section of Vaerinor and have overcome many technological difficulties in order to live near and in the dangerous desert, the Restless Expanse.

 

  • Ember Dwarves are also known as the Crazed amoung humans. Short, pale skinned, and unnaturally thin, these creatures are aggressive, highly tempermental, and worship the dark gods, Otano and Xoda.

 

  • White Elves live in the icy expanse of southern section of Vaerinor. They are the only race bold enough to sail on the deadly seas of Alpha Magenta, where even their abilities and worship of Niveen can sometimes fail.

 

  • Sylpham live amid the forests across Alpha Magenta. Shorter and with commonly brown to reddish hair, they appear pudgey and slow moving, but are avid protectors of their forests and dangerous in combat.

 

  • Stone Trolls are uncommon creatures that live in isolated, rocky plains. Rarely seen, mostly because of the containment of the Order of the Unseen, they are not very intelligent but are magic resistant and can shield others from magic as well.
    • Vampires exist more in legend but according to dwarven legends at least one exists, thanks to the gifts granted from the Dark Gods.

    Characters & Organizations of Vaerinor

    The books in the series Arcane Magic take place on the continent of Vaerinor. Here are some of the notable characters and orders.

     

    • Raor Gaiallard is a Master Scholar with the Order of the Unseen after having abandoned his mage apprenticeship.

     

    • Rosalyn Cotenwol is a librian with the Order of the Unseen after having failed her mage apprenticeship.

     

    • Arch Mage Afekius is one of the four Arch Mages with the Order of the Unseen who oversee the island of Atheneum. He acts as a protector for Raor.

     

    • Koss Mal is an Ember Dwarf who has abandoned the violent ways of his people and is attempting to live amoung humans as a blacksmith in the city of Amazal.

     

    • Dramna Etzo is a White Elf who is a member of the elven Assassisn’s Guild and works as an instructor along with fellow teacher Phairn Maldo. Within the Assassin’s Guild, she is known as Shadow. She is engaged to Ubrhi Tavvron…
